Are all players compatible?
We're talking an interface here that shows text on the car's radio and allows you to use the controls, particularly those on the steering wheel, to control the iPod. Unless all players have the exact same text, and the exact same functionality, it's going to be mighty hard to come up with a standard.

That said, there is a standard--having an aux plug on the front of the car stereo, so you can run a line out of any device (the iPod via the headphone jack).

Interesting to see the worm turn though. For years, Mac users have been told that there's no point for software developers and game makers to do Mac versions, as Windows dominates the market. So now you've got an Apple product dominating the market, and you're seeing the same thing. Why should BMW et al bother with the also-rans?
