Congrats Linux User 147560 on paying off your debt. It will undoubtedly make you feel more free than you have in a long long time. Been there myself about six years ago.
But if you want to be truly free your work is not done. No, to be truly free you must be financially independent. So in six months after you've paid off the last of the credit card balance, pay off your car if you have car payments. Then, celebrate for a night. Then, all that extra money you were paying to creditors each month while you were paying it off? Put it into a money market account with the best interest rate you can find, each month, and don't touch it. Build up a rainy day fund that will carry you through a job loss and a potential long term stint of unemployment. Many experts recommend keeping six months worth of living expenses in a cash account. In this global downsizing/outsourcing/offshoring uber-competitive environment I say go for two years worth of living expenses. Then if/when you do get "laid off" through no fault of your own, you can have a big silly grin on your face and go backpack across Europe for a month or two like I did three summers ago after my own downsizing.
Instead of worrying about the mortgage or rent payment or keeping food on the table, you can take time for yourself and enjoy life, and go back to work when you, or the market, is ready. - Posted by: crm_z Posted on: 01/13/05 You are currently: a Guest | Members login | Terms of Use
