Mainly because I have a sideline business. I could make way more than the 5K putting the extra time into my own gig. And it's job security. You have no idea how nice it is not to worry about being laid off or outsourced. Go ahead, punk, make my day. Even said that in my last performance review. "I don't give a crap." An exact quote.
