Lose the pager and I'll take the time

Being on-call 24/7/365 even during vacation is how the company I work for behaves. And yes, they do call me when I am "on vacation" or sick as dog with the flu or on Sunday morning at 5AM. So the notion of time off is one that I have not experienced since the early 90's. I am always on, that is why I chose not to have a family, I could not in good conscience ignore them and make them secondary to the job. I am amazed how people can be parents in an era that penalizes those who value family over work. Our society pays lip service to family values, loyalty and service. Just look at what we do to returning wounded soldiers, lose a leg or an arm and we'll pay $12,000/year, I am sure if you lost your leg(s) or eye or arm that $1000/month will surely cover all your living expenses for your sacrifices for your country. This whole notion of service and loyalty is trumped by the short-term self interest of capital.
