My mistake
Because I do not use a mac, I did not know about the X11 workarounds that are required to run OpenOffice on a mac - I was ASSUMING that it worked the same as on my Linux box - I was wrong.

If the deal with the devil expired, then where is the Apple Newton? Where is the Mac OS handheld that Jobs promised when he murdered the Newton?
