No, all they'd have to do to break it on your computer is send an update to WMP through Windows Update. It achieves the same thing. You could choose not to update your WMP, just as you could also have chosen not to update your iPod when the time came.

And if MS told the mp3 player manufacturers they were changing their codec, you can bet all of them would put together a firmware update for the players.

Weren't Apple's tweaks to break Real just part of the OS that the iPod runs?

I have a lot of issues with companies selling me a product with a promise that I can do X with it, and then later on, changing what I can do with it (see TiVo for example, and how you can't record and save certain shows now). I don't have a problem with Apple here, because they told me I wouldn't be able to play Real's music on the iPod, and nothing has changed. If anything, people should be angry at Real for promising them something they couldn't maintain.

Short term thinking. Right now, there's no money to be made selling music online. But if volume gets high enough, there could be. Factor in things like selling ringtones and you've got a nice profit center. I don't expect Apple to be so all inclusive in the distant future, once they've established themselves as the solid leader of the field.
