Well, what they're doing is changing the firmware on the machine. When you bought an iPod, it wasn't crippled for the hacked DRM Real tunes, because they didn't yet exist. A firmware (software) update later broke this functionality. So in some ways, the end result is not all that different. It's deliberately making your product not work with a competitor's supplies.

I don't think anyone is thrilled that Apple (or MS for that matter) is doing this. But it's understandable. If you have a business and you have a clear advantage, you'd be a fool not to milk that advantage as far as you can legally. There's usually one reason people own companies, to make money.
