Sony is weird
You have to remember that Sony is the oddball in this market--they own a record company that gets to make decisions for their tech company. So they decided to seriously limit their players to only the ATRAC format. This, of course, was a major mistake, and they've since given it up and are making mp3 compatible players now.

However, none of the above problems affect the iPod.
