Someone must walk away, or the technology dies
---It might work for the network stations though---

I don't know, advertisers aren't real keen on the whole TiVO thing as they know most people will skip the ads on a recording.

What must happen for this technology to survive is for enough people to walk away from HBO. Can't record the Sopranos and Six Feet Under? Fine, then cancel your subscription to HBO. Hit them in the pocketbook. Sadly, there aren't enough people willing to do this, or who need to record the shows to watch them.

Instead, networks like HBO will soon realize there's no downside whatsoever to turning on all of the flags on all of their programs. You won't be able to record anything, and if you missed it, you'll have to buy the dvd. TiVO and digital recorders will quickly die out as a technology, as will the media center PC and portable players.

Either the networks must be given a financial incentive to allow recording, or the tech companies given a financial incentive to build devices that ignore the wishes of the networks, or else we just won't have this type of technology. Ah well, it could have meant a lot of money to a lot of people, but right now, I don't think it will ever be allowed to mature.
