backward compatibility may be simulated
A couple of weeks ago one manufacturer (I think it was panasonic, the article was on zdnet) demonstrated a drive that worked with both the current DVD format and the new blue ray.

I believe it was a PC drive but if they can make one for a PC surely they can put it in a TV player.

I'm guessing here but I think this was achieved by building two lasers into the drive, one to read each format.
