its really about backwardcompatibility
Blue-ray DVD is not backward compatible with the existing DVD, thus it requires to have 2 dvd players, one blue-ray and one classic old one if you want to be able to play you existing DVD's and the new blue-ray ones.

HD-DVD supports the current format and the next HD-DVD format, the discs are also cheaper to make (at least for the moment). That is the primary argument for the HD-DVD group, whilst blue-ray group goes for bigger capacities.

so the mangle goes between the groups. it is the same discussion again between better quality (speak higher capacity) and backward compatibility as with the VHS (compatible) and betamax (better quality) standard.

I bet the HD-DVD will finally make it earlier to the market, whilst blue-ray will be for professionel usage (video editing etc.., backups).

And this until HD-DVD caches up with blue-ray on capacity and then blue-ray will only be used for computer backups. the common user will ruther see HD-DVD for his purpose.
