How not to treat consumers
1) Announce new technologies years before they reach the market.
2) Have competing non-compatible formats.
3) Make old hardware/software obsolete. Old is defined as anything over 6 months old.
4) Confuse and disappoint customers by providing no meaningful amount of product to play on new devices. (SACD and DVD-Audio discs are not impossible to find, but most retailers draw a blank when you ask then about these discs and selections are spotty at best).

I know many people who have deferred HDTV and DVD player purchases because they keep hearing about the next big thing. They don't want to spend thousands of dollars on the wrong format. Yet the next big thing seems to take years, if ever, to hit the market. All this diddling about formats, which DRM to use and the MASSIVE incompatibilities that arise due to these poor decisions is turning off potential customers.
