Let's see....
"Or one would not buy until that new Mac is release. Remember Apple is a hardware company. If they told us that cheaper Macs are coming out at a future time, why would anyone by now?"

I think you said it right, but I am not so sure that it has too much to do with Apple's innovation (later part of your article). The reason is that the statement you have above is true for almost any commercial products, not just Apple. For instance, if you know AMD 64 3500+ is going to be $250 next month instead of $400 right now, you will not buy it unless you really need it.

Also, hiding something seems to me not the way to protect their current product. Let's say if right now, Apple tells us they are going to have a new cheaper iMac, there is no way their information just stops there; they, at the same time, have to tell you what's in the new iMac. Something like the new cheaper iMac might have integrated, shared memory video card (less powerful), 128 Mb RAM (less RAM), 20 Mb Hard drive (less capacity), and a CD-ROM (not even CD-RW), am I going to buy it? I might still buy the iMac they have now.

Another thing is that I think most of Apple's product is excellent enough to attract buyers, and playing tricks like keep it a secret does not help too much. I do agree with one of your points that the excitment of buying a new Apple product is enchanting. Adn to keep that "excitment", part of the strategy will be hiding the information for the product to bring up people's emotion to buy it. But for me, take iPod as an example: MP3 player is not a new idea at all and the iPod (video model) is not the first multimedia machine that can be put in your palm, a lot of companies had designed this kind of products, but their quality just no match with iPod. So, what make iPod a popular product is the excellence of this product, not the "keep it a secret untill we release" part".

Apple should have enough confidence that they are capable of doing better design, better quality product. With that, letting us know earlier will just bring more desire for us to buy it. To put it simple, Apple should keep us informated. That's what I think that will help Apple.
