News vs. rumors
There's a generally accepted rule in news that if you want to keep your sources anonymous, you have to "triple-source" whatever they say. That means you've got 3 independent people or documents that say the same thing. You get that, and you're pretty sure that it's not just one joker pulling your leg.

So your reporter friend is correct: good journalism requires verification. Rumor sites don't generally follow that triple-sourcing rule. I think most of their readers understand that and take everything with a grain of salt. That's the difference between journalism and rumor sites; the New York Times and Drudge.

Some corporations would like to be able to threaten media into not publishing their secrets. And it works a lot of the time, especially with small operations like Think Secret. But this is legal bullying, and the law is really in the side of the media -- if they can afford to defend themselves.
