I would expect you to be correct except...
I was talking to a local news reporter and he said that journalists cannot blindly except word from someone and publish whatever they want. There has to be some verifying of the resource and some due diligence to protect the media. Just because someone works for so-and-so and tells you something about them does not mean that reporters can report it (his words, not mine). At least that is what I am being told. But neither of us are lawyers.

Where I work we are a high profile organization in the public's eye. During orientation, we are told to not talk to the media and to pass the media to Public Relations. But we are also told that if I did talk to someone something they did not want public; both the media and I could be held accountable; even if it turns out to be true. Again, I?m not sure how that works.

Like I said I'm not a lawyer and I know secrets are published all the time. But based on my information, that does not absolve the media of guilt. Most times secrets reported in the computer industry are secrets that are intentionally leaked. And also in my opinion, if someone signs an agreement to keep quiet and they still talk; they are scumbags and I have very little respect for them or the reporters reporting what they say. One person dishonored their trust and the other just encouraged it. Since one person lied about keeping quiet, how reliable of a source could they be (Ok, this is more ethics)?
