Sledgehammer To Crack A Nut
A very apt saying. Unfortunately, in this case, the sledgehammer also misses the nut altogether. The utilisation of DRM will impact the everyday HONEST consumer who is happy to pay for the product and only wants to be able to back it up (Play the backup and keep the original pristine seems common sense to me). The real pirates affecting the industry at the global level will develop disc and player workarounds in days/weeks and continue with business as usual. The problem is both a political and legal issue. Until countries with sources producing pirate copies on a mass scale are able/willing to bring them to justice and apply punishments (eg. imprisonment, confiscation of assets/finances attained, substantial fines etc) that make the venture too risky, then the situation will not change. Finally, industry beware. Any means taken to protect the industry must also allow for the honest consumer who wants to maintain the quality of the entertainment they have legally purchased. Do not bite off the hand that feeds you.
