Huh? Nice Pott Fudhead
"If I were to go with Linux on my Dell notebook I too would have to add in some costs:
1) Knowledgable Linux technician to install the OS"

No tech needed. I installed Mandrake on my Gateway laptop. Dual boots quite nicely thank you.

"2) Help converting (if possible) my Word, Excel and Powerpoint to OpenOffice format."

Can't comment here cause all my work is on OpenOffice. Now I must say that larger firms than mine may not be able to use OpenOffice for their business, but I can and it works well.

"3) Help finding and installing peripheral software that is installed with Windows."

Gee all my peripheral software that is installed with windows was replaced quite nicely with what came with my Linux distro. Also no problems with any peripheral hardware either.

"6) Help with any future upgrades to all of the above"

I do not anticipate any problems here either.

"In all my years of owning a PC I have never been had to pay for assistance to get something to work on my PC."

Neither have I.

"This is where free software will get you in the end."

Yeah ain't it nice. So why don't you give Linux a try before you decide to slam it. Don't tell me you have already tried it because you would have said so in the first place.
