They only sell aggregate data, nothing specifically linked to a given user. I think by ZIP code is as granular as it gets. Also, you can opt out of the data collection. TiVo hackers have examined the data stream the TiVo sends back when it phones home and confirmed that once you opt out, the viewing data is no longer sent.

As for them tacking on commercials, I'm not crazy about that. But I'm sticking with Series 1 models simply because I like the hackability, so I don't have to worry about any of that stuff anyway.
