The cost is too much and the real estate is scarce in most entertainment centers.
I would normally have a DVD, a VCR, a cable box, an FM radio, --with AM too but I never use it-- a CD Player, a phonograph, --gotta play those Beatles LP's!-- a compact cassette tape player, --for those lecture series on tape, etc.-- a component center to connect it all, --usually on the FM reciever-- a television set, a video game console and possibly an equaliser. Of course it would all be connected to a 5.1 Surround Sound Speaker System that the reeiver supports or through a Dolby Surround Sound Interpreter purchased separately.
Then there are the CD, DVD and VHS libraries.
So a PC with Dual Video in --VCR and Digital Cable Box if I want digital cable or a DirectTV box if I want DirectTV-- on a cable-ready TV/FM-tuner card, --which eliminates the Digital Cable box if I just go regular cable--, a DVD+-RW player --covers the DVD and CD player plus gives me reproduction for traveling in a DVD-equipped SUV-- a multiple aux-in sound card --for tape and phono although the phonograph can be connected to the mic input-- with Digital Dolby 5.1 --or 7.1-- Surround Sound out plus digital audio in/out, --just because the need may arise-- and a video card with full hw accelerated 16:9 2D rendering --for DVD and MPEG playback-- and hw accelerated OpenGL 3D --for gaming-- with VGA/DVI/sVHS out --for recording to VHS if necessary-- and a 500GB SATA HDD. All in one slick unit that's 1U high running a supercool AMD K6/III or Sempron processor and Linux.
For a TV set, either a HDTV compatible monitor with DVI or VGA input or a VGA projector and a white/silver wall or projector screen.
Now, which entertainment center is less cluttered? Not to mention that since I can archive all my flix and CD's on the HDD, I can store the originals in the basement and not need shelving for my hugh collection on the entertainment center. Or purchase a DVD carusell (or two) that holds 50 DVD's (or more) if I'm afraid of interpretations of "fair use and archival purposes" clauses.
Yep. Cheap, small, multipurpose, powerfull and sweet! Try diy case modding to match your personal style and decor if you want to reduce that 1U design to something not quite as wide as nineteen inches. - Posted by: The King's Servant Posted on: 11/12/04 You are currently: a Guest | Members login | Terms of Use
