This story is *so* out of date.
A couple of years ago this was true. But Tivo has made almost no progress in the past several years, and hackers like me are abandoning it. For example, Tivo could have put in a CD-RW drive and allowed you to burn 1hr programs to SVCD, and *play* SVCDs. They finally brought out a Tivo with DVD, but it won't do SVCD, costs way too much, and they won't let you move your service contract to a new box. DUMB!!

Instead, I've built a white box with a PVR-250, bought a copy of Sage TV (which uses the exact same TV listing service as Tivo), and now I can do all those things and more.

I have to say, the Tivo is easier to use. But if they won't give me the features I want, it's "bye, bye Tivo".
