One hit does not make a successful console

As impressive as Halo 2's single day sales might appear on absolute dollars, one hit does not make a successful console. Not by a long shot. Sony and its affiliates have been able to conjure up multi-million dollar hits on a consistent basis-- year after year.

I am no Sony fanboy, but compared with "Playstation", the X-Box neither has market share nor mind share. Market share and mind share are the bars for success when you're talking about big companies like Microsoft and Sony. Not distant second place.

To me, X-Box has been a failure, though not a dismal failure like Jaguar and 3DO. X-Box's only success, if you want to call it that, is that it got and kept Microsoft's "foot" in the console market. While no one said that was easy, this bar is way, way too low to be measuring success in the aggressive console market.

One of the big problems is that as good as Halo 2 might be, it remains to be seen whether Halo 2 itself can sell more X-Boxes and increase the size of Microsoft's market. So far, all I've heard is impressive sales figures within the installed base over a single day-- but the installed base is relatively small, so the BIG question is: Is Halo 2 good enough to substantially increase the size of the user base?
