Depth and breadth of selection is one reason
Granted, I agree with you that there are barely enough recent movies to fill a month - I rent 9 dvds a month but they are not all movies. I also rent The Sopranos, 6 Feet Under, SCTV and The Family Guy dvds so I can the sense the arc of the season, so part of the costs offset HBO, Showtime etc which can cost about $9 each in my market. So it is a value proposition to me. I choose to not have premium cable channels at $18/month yet I can see some of that content I want to see legally via Netflix and I can rent dvds in general and not pay late fees which is a major issue for me. Plus I can see all those movies from the 80's and 90's I missed that are not in my local Blockbuster. However, if you only watch one or two movies a month then Netflix and the other services are not for you.
