Price and selection
I haven't been to a rental store in ages, but when I first started netflix I did the math and for everything near me, I'd only have to watch 5 movies a month to spend less than going to a rental store. And I usually do average 4-6 a month.

The real killer, though, is selection. Local video stores are crap. They may have 60 copies of an Adam Sandler film, but nothing at all I actually want to watch. With netflix, I have a large queue of foreign films, documentaries, classics, and obscure things (as well as Hollywood fare). 90% of my list are items I would never find locally. Because of them I can see films that won't play in theaters here and won't be kept in stores, and I've definitely broadened my horizons. That easily makes the service worth the price.
