Can of Worms - OPEN!
Newton was the first handheld. Its hardware was never quite up to snuff, but its software/OS became better and better. By most accounts its handwriting recognition is on par or BETTER than anything out there today. The last instantiation of the Newton included low power, high performance StrongARM chips (now called Xscale). SO it was the first with Xscale! These last Newtons were good enough hardware-wise to start taking over. Apple had already spun off the newton company, when it was spun back in? How do you unspin off something? I guess Steve found a way, because Newton was taken off the market, and its OS was locked in the vault at Apple to this day - Many have inquired about purchasing it - only to be rebuffed by Apple. Why is something so old, so valuable?

Anyway, Palm was a software company when it created the Graffiti software for the NEWTON - in 1994! Shows you how state of the art it is, huh? Anyway, after the Newton was murdered, Palm decided that it could do handhelds - and the rest is history.
