As an Ipod owner
I've had my Ipod for nearly two years and have loved it. However, I notice each new version of itunes seems to limit functionality. White the download plug-in is something that I never used (although I may have in the future) there are other limitations that have bothered me.

For one thing, itunes initially allowed me to chose whether I wanted to download music in mp3 or apple's format (m4p). Having a wireless network, I would download in mp3 so I could listen to music through my network on my company laptop, on which I am not permitted to install 3rd party software like itunes. Not being a Macintosh person (for good reasons, I used to work for Apple and Macs really don't have any advantages over today's Windows computers) this would allow me to keep my music in a format thats more universally accepted (especially in the Windows community).

I would blindly download new versions of itunes thinking that they must be more improved than the last version; only to discover that each new version further limited the itunes compatibility with the Windows world.

As anyone that owns an ipod can tell you, after about a year the device is virtually unusable unless you change the battery or get a new one. Well after two years that time has come for me and (while Apple sold me on using MP3 Players as my primary music source, my next one will NOT BE AN APPLE IPOD!!!

What Apple has to realize is that like the Mac, the ipod is no longer superior. These days there are many Windows (and Mac) friendly MP3 players that are as good (if not superior) to the ipod. Apple's refusal to open license the Mac (when it was superior to the other computers out there) was it's demise (they did open license it years later when it was too late to make a positive impact). Now it seems history is repeating itself.
