RE: junk
>There is no reason to buy Dell:
- Generally they are more expensive than other companies (esp. whitebox vendors)
- Their machines are typically subpar performers.
- Support is absolutely HORRIBLE.
- The parts that make the machine are not that good - we're talking about bottom of the barrel parts with crippled BIOS'es, shoddy quality, etc.

I've actually never owned a Dell and the only time I've used them is at work (have had 4 Dells at a couple companies over the years.) In that time, while I didn't find anything overly impressive about any of the machines, I also have had little to no problems with them. On the one machine I did have a problem with (the newest machine I have came with a buzzing power supply problem,) a replacement part was at my desk the next day.

Aside from the PCs, though, I have heard nothing but bad concerning the Dell DJ. I've had the chance to play with one for an hour or so, and I've got to say the bad reputation is deserved. The interface is horrible and it's difficult to find what you want if there are more than a handful of songs on it.

There's been so many arguments made by competitors and zealots concerning 'problems' with the iPod but the bottom line is, no competitor has released a decent alternative. No one has made an interface that approaches the intuitiveness of the iPod (especially the mini and 4G models), no one has offered a combination of supported filetypes that's any better than the iPod (if someone released something that could play mp3, wma, ogg, aiff, wav, mp4/aac and lossless, then they'd be on, but until them we basically get 1 protected format plus mp3 and maybe a couple misc. formats thrown in for good measure,) and no one has offered a method to get music from your pc to your player that rivals the iPod/iTunes setup. When Sony first announced their player, I had high hopes for them (surely, Sony could have come up with something to rival the iPod,) but alas, they blew it just like everyone else has.

I seriously hope someone manages to come out with a music product that can truly compete with Apple. That can only spur compeition leading to even better players and lower prices. Until then, I'm sticking with my iPod.
