Give them their due
You are correct that Dell makes, for the most part, commodity boxes - but let's not call them junk.

Much of their line is inexpensive wintel machines (for which their is a big market) but they also make higher end models and some decent entry level servers. I buy Dell when I need something cheap and (generally) reliable, but shop other brands when looking for upscale machines.

With that said, I agree that Dell DJ's aren't going to compete with the iPod any more than top of the line Yugos do with BMW.
