But if one device does both no need to buy two devices

So you have PC that connects to you TV so you can use it as PVR while at the same you could the computer task while not watching TV. It's not a bad idea. Personally though I don't see why you would the Media Center to do this as you can do it with any PC. Of course the Media Center looks nicer on the outside however.
