Warranties killed Coleco and the TI-99/4A

Now granted, this is going back a generation, but the situations were similar. Both of the above systems were sold largely for games. Both were being undercut by an unexpected competitor and both were lowering their manufacturing expenses while raising their warranties to assure customers of the wholesomeness of the reduced priced units.

The shameful part was that the units were FoRD and the warranty/replacement costs became a profit sink. TI got out of the self-designed system market. Coleco died.

I doubt Microsoft will die, but they may have to reposition their price and increase QA, exit the market, or... well, unlike Coleco, Micrsoft has the ability to wait out a generation and try for a version 3.

Will anyone wait for the Xbox 720 though; if the 360 left a foul taste in their mouth?
