In my prior message I meant to write: "a luminance (or brightness) channel, a red channel, and a BLUE channel."

A luminance channel is predominantly a green channel with tails of the sensitivity distribution that exented into the red and blue. Interpolation would be required as with today's Bayer array. Resolution in the red and blue chanels would be compromised, but that is a good trade since the eye is far less sensitive to red and blue sharpness.
