New look at an old idea
The mathematics to do this have been around for years. The Kodak PhotoCD YCC format is analogous with a luminance channel and two color channels. NTSC television does the same thing. About 30 years ago, R. W. G. Hunt proposed a color film consisting of a B&W layer and red and blue sensitive layers underneath.

What I want to know is why they are wasting 1/6 of the pixels with green filters. It is easy to get good color with three channels, a luminance (or brightness) channel, a red channel, and a green channel.
