Bad technicians...
That's obviously a tech who doesn't know what they're doing. Anti-virus CANNOT void a warranty. In fact, the only way to void a warranty is to damage the parts physically while not under a complete care contract. You can replace parts, exchange parts, remove parts, move parts, put in third party parts, etc. and the Dell parts in the computer will always be in warranty. While Dell warranties do not cover software troubleshooting, there is NO way that any anti-virus software will void a warranty, or any software at all will void a warranty unless it brings hardware out of specs and damages it.

It's obviously a case of bad technicians not knowing what the hell they're talking about and not knowing the tools available to them. If someone says something like that, ask to be transferred back into the queue to talk to a different tech, and ask for a case number and a summary e-mail, then reply and send feedback on the tech.

Policy is consistent across the board, it's the technicians who are inconsistent. Believe me, when I see this kind of stuff, I send feedback to their managers about their poor skills. If it comes down to a virus problem that cannot be fixed, it's O/S reinstall or replacement of hard drive (as a last resort).

Any Dell technician who says otherwise is full of crap.
