XP is Mainstream
Vista has a lot to offer, but it's clear that Vista is "cutting edge" and XP is "mainstream". The vast majority of software out there is "certified" for Windows XP, and less so for Vista.

I saw the same thing happen when Windows 98/ME was dropped. It was clear that a lot of games (for home users) were not ready for Windows 2000 or XP yet.

If you don't play many games, you might be OK to upgrade, but you still might have compatiblity issues with other software too. Some MS Vista patches even address various program compatibility.
