A set-top DVD player and LCD screen use a LOT less energy...
..than a big PC (or a Mac, which is just a PC anyway) Your average PC uses 400 watts, more or less depending on configuration, but 400 is not an unreasonable average.

Why should I care about downloading something onto a hard drive that's bound to crash? The DVD disc from the store is good enough and no PC (or Mac) is required. Even burning a disc (or two, since home-burnt discs don't seem to last as long...)

The whole thing is a wasteful gimmick. Which reminds me, where's Al Gore saying how Apple's initiatives are a big waste of energy? oh that's right, he's on Apple's board - he's not going to risk his job with all the environmental flapping. Apple's board is also not the best place to be given Apple's little history with iPod batteries, lack of recycling, and other issues only FINALLY being addressed after years' of HP, Dell, and others offering proper recycling initiatives. (Al's been on the board since 2003...)

Forgive me for being a cynic. I should be out there making money too. I know Al has an overall great record on the subject, but when the "A" company is mentioned the whole room turns to silence so soft you can hear even the baby crickets chirping...
