One other factor.
Interesting point on there being a price point that consumers don't want to exceed. I just purchased a new TV last year, and ended up going with a flat screen CRT from Samsung for $400. Part of my thought process was that the market is still in a great deal of transition. Flat panel TVs continue to drop and appear to have at least another halving in the price coming over the next 4-5 years (just my uneducated guess), and the technology will likely improve quite a bit as well. Also, in that same time period HD may finally start to hit on all cylinders. Until then, why spend extra? We have the TV we want today at a reasonable price, and when it needs to be replaced I'll be able to get what we want then at a reasonable price as well.
