Believe it or not, ink is high-tech stuff with many patents and trade secrets involved.

Then again, 99.9% of the stuff printed on inkjets doesn't need to last 100 years, there's no need for us to be squirting that expensive high tech ink around when we print our shopping lists.

Imagine a world with "home" printers which use cheap ink for shopping lists and "professional" printers for printing works of art.

That could REALLY knock the prices down to a tiny fraction of what they are today.
