Low LIight is not the end of it
Low light is a major issue when reducing the pixel size, but MTF is the second, as pixels are getting smaller, the distance or pitch between the pixels is getting smaller as well, so a demand for higher spatial resolution of the optics arises, and this is not simple! it has a bigger influence on the higher wavelength (i.e. red), and can dither the image to have an actual amount of information much smaller then expected.
