The tale of two cameras
I have a 2.1 megapixel Olympus 490 and a Canon 7.1 megapixel SD550. As was stated in the paper, the higher pixel camera does not do well in low light or dim situations when taking a still photo. However, in the same situation using movie mode the outcome is outstanding. The 2.1 megapixel does a better job in dim conditions, but it may be the fact that the flash is so much brighter than on the smaller Canon. I have not compared both without using the flash in low light conditions. When some of the photos come out too dark, I can software tweak or correct Olympus still images with better results than the high megapixel Canon. Still, the Canon produces superior results for extremely close or farther away day light shots. As I said, the movie results of the Canon are excellent in low light conditions - not sure why the difference? I also discovered that with the higher pixel camera, I can zoom in on a dim still photo to capture more detail, which appears brighter than when viewing the full image. I?m still working with the mega capabilities of the Canon vs. the simpler, now in the drawer, Olympus. It would be nice to have the small size of the Canon with a greater optical capability than 3x.
