Apple TV Support
Or will it play movies stored on the harddrive in any format. They say it does work with the PC. If it's only quick time or Apple propierty DRMed formats then yup this is useless. Now if it is a portal to my content on the PC then it's got a use.

Here's what I found.

Supported video codecs:

* H.264, Protected H.264
o Baseline profile LC (640x480x30p)
o Baseline profile (320x240x30p)
o Main profile (1280x720x24p)
* MPEG-4 simple profile (640x480x30p)

Supported audio codecs:

* AAC, Protected AAC (16-320 kbps)
* MP3 (16-320 kbps, VBR)
* Apple Lossless
* AIFF
* WAV

Supported image formats:

* JPEG
* BMP
* GIF
* TIFF
* PNG

I would tend to think of this as a more media savy version of Airport Extreme.
It isn't really a replacement for a media center, because it can't play dvds, HD-Dvd's Bluray media, games, cd's etc. It seems more like a foot in the door for Apple into the home media market.
Quite frankly, I don't think becoming another Xbox or PS3 is a direction Apple should to go in. Ultimately it might behoove Apple to keep this as a low cost hub/adapter type device that just connects the computer to the rest of your living room media equipment.
This thing should get smaller and smaller. Perhaps ultimately going inside the TV. Future TV's will infact, probably have wireless built right into the unit to connect to any computer. Apple should concentrate on building iTunes media dominance that can be accessed by any number of devices.
