Buy only what you can't live without and stick with DVD for now, BECAUSE...
with UPCONVERTING DVD players with both component and HDMI outputs now VERY affordable (I got one for $50 on sale on Black Friday, and now they're regularly on sale for about that price), you can watch a good-quality REGULAR DVD in what LOOKS LIKE HD-DVD without the expense of either the more expensive player OR the more expensive discs.

Of course I haven't bought either, so I can't say that as a certainty... But what I CAN SAY is that when I've used the upconversion on mine, it looked GREAT -- just as good as any of the HD broadcasts I get.

If we all do this while the true HD formats get sorted out, we can save some money and make the industry concern itself more with consumer needs than its own greed and competitive nature!
