Same story (greed), different product & time
Sony killed beta for failing to license all the players equitably. While VHS proliferated with licensing readily available. It didn't matter how much better beta was technically, it was kept in tight supply and at higher price points from the limited market it established for itself at the onset. It began to catch on and take off once Sony saw it's greedy blunder and loosened up. Too little and too late was the call. You see how the world market made the final call with it's cash purchase voting.

Sony is doing it again. Instead of competing technology fighting for market share and trying to contol the market, BOTH camps should be looking for ways to make them work together that is economically viable and in a way that the consumer will vote with their cash again. The way it is now, it can become something that never gels at all as a 3rd format may wall become wider available while these two compete head on. Both will lose while the 3rd swoops in.

Content providers will have a big say as well. They must have a large supply of what ever format is out there so the masses will be interested. With such a limited availability of CDX and LDV content, they tanked in a few short years.

I look at what is coming out and I look at what content I already own, and see it is not compatible, and I say no way. I would have to spend $1,000's in new content if I get the new format or keep both formats going which is ridiculous too. Especially with 4 TV's and 4 DVD's & 3 VHS in the house. I'm slowly swapping the VHS to DVD and will eventually dispose of the tapes entirely. But I'm not about to change out the household for limited content in a new format that may or may not be here in a couple years.

They also have to look at Federal legislation. That has killed HDTV programming to protect the public. Vendors do not want to make everything dual or backward compatible. Most HD programming has to be released simultaneously with NTSC for broadcast so the American public is not shut out by new broadcast technology they cannot receive.

While this new format deals with the recorded formats, downloadable is a big role and broadcast downloadable is here now via satelite and cable.

So what if they can put more background info or other extras on a disc? How much more is needed? Make it a 2 disc set as most have done when extras don't fit. The quality will only be as good as the audio and video system anyway. So unless you have something that can handle the new format output, it's a complete waste of money to upgrade a player/recorder and content.
