Well, it depends on who does the asking.
From a techie POV, th HD-DVD format is better when it comes to data capabilities, content protection and internationalization.

From a movie mongul POV, the Blu-Ray format is better when it comes to filling more movie content on a drive.

The truth is that the HD-DVD format does, in fact, leverage existing DVD infrastructure and therefore is easier for existing production houses to produce both DVDs and HD-DVDs. Plus the HD-DVD format actually holds adequate space when it comes to what we typycally see on DVDs. For instance, the entire 5-disc edition of The Lord of The Ring - The Fellowship of The Ring could fit on one HD-DVD in high def. The added space of the Blu-Ray is not necessary. The question now becomes, "But what if we wanted to add more?"

If I Wanted to try and put Star Wars I-VI on one or more discs in hi-def, I'd probably want to use Blu-Ray. But If I wanted to make my content internationalised and inexpensive I'd want to use HD-DVD.

If I want to store my data on one or more discs, although Blu-Ray gives more GB for the buck of media, HD-DVD gives greater flexibility, interoperability and extensibility particularly when it comes to multi-use and content protection.

In the end, it is not an apples to apples comparison. There are certain features of Blu-Ray I like and there are certain features of HD-DVD I like but TWAIN the two shall meet.

I also agree that the winner of the war will either be a third party or the first one to drop prices to be comparable to current DVD-RWs on the market.
