The consumer loses
It is always the consumer that loses when these corporations can't put aside their differences and come up with a workable standard.

The big problem with the whole 'format war' is that, as you mention, no one cares what format, they just want it to work. Beside that fact, I keep hearing mention that these larger discs will allow the media creators to store more extra features on the disc. I don't know about anyone else, but I usually spend a grand total of five minutes browsing the extra features on DVDs before I get bored.

The point of this technology really is to push HD video, but the marketing folks have realized that there are just not that many people out there who have HD televisions, so they try and suggest that the extra space on the disc is great for more useless commentaries by the key-grip and his cousin Marge.

This format war will continue because consumers won't buy it, in order to take advantage of either format you need an HD television, and in order to buy an HD television people generally want HD content sent to them, and all of this is currently way to expensive for the average consumer.

Technology that is way ahead of its time. I work for a communications company and we are going to start replacing all of our video conferencing systems with Hi-Def video conferencing systems. A useless technology. Do I really need 1080p video conferencing? How much detail do I need when talking to someone overseas?
