The downfall of RAM
Are we reading here about the impending downfall of RAM? I mean the only meaningful difference between a hard drive and RAM is that RAM is accessed faster because it's based on circuit speeds whereas a hard drive is based on mechanical speeds. An operating system that couldn't find the space it needed on RAM would simply use the hard drive as supplemental source. And that's when computers would start running real slow cause of that much slower mechanical speed on the hard drive. Techies would say "get more RAM."

Well if what we're reading here is the introduction of circuit speed hard drives (which like every circuit will get smaller and faster - moore's law) with eventual capacities in the hundreds of gigabytes...well...who needs RAM?

Imagine an operating system with a gigabyte of RAM (or two gigs if you're a power hungry user) that relies on the hundreds of additional gigabytes available a hard drive to act as supplemental RAM. Now imagine that system having access to a hard drive hundreds of gigabytes in size that's as fast as RAM. Who needs RAM?

Goodbye RAM.
Hello hard drive.
