The difference here being...
The ipod debuted to overwelmingly positive reviews from every gamut of the media. It also benifited from the fact that it was released toward the beginning of the MP3 era, (at least to the general public) And was able to ride that wave.

The Zune opened to almost universally scathing reviews from tech and pop media sources alike. And unlike the situation the iPod was in, the Zune has to compete against the iPod.

Completely different situations.
