No difference.
That was my point. When MS "rode IBM's back" wasn't it plain to Apple they must do something?
At least adopt tcp/ip and take a friggin stab at it. When the clones were growing larger than IBM in PC sales, all it would have taken was a smart Steve Jobs to not wait 30 years and make the move then. There is not a vendor in the world that wouldn't sell another desktop right now if it were popular enough, along side Microsoft. Dell keeps mentioning Linux support in teh server arena. Apple had an opportunity to bust up that dominance before win95 hit. You say Apple innovates and MS copies? That is what business is all about many times. In all industries. But to say Apple innovates is giving them too much credit and MS too little. Like MS they know a good idea when they see it is all. They did not innovate the GUI or the mouse. They did not innovate the portable music player. These are their crowning achievements and they were all taken from other's ideas and innovations instead. PARC, all mp3 players in the world since the 90s., for example.
I believe it's only the sheer size of MS that makes them so hated by many. Any other capitalist vendor would have done the same if they had gotten the IBM deal. Can you truely say otherwise?
Look at Apple now. They are going for total domination of the music player market full speed ahead. Can you honestly tell me, had IBM come to mr. Jobs and he took on the project, he'd not have done the same in the PC desktop market?
People have this hatred that almost comes off, in fact it does come off as, jealousy.
Nobody ever said capitalism was not a blood sport. There is no large company not guilty of at least Wanting an entire market to themselves. Heck, look at IBM who spent more time in anti trust court than the ipod has been in existence. They are the model by which tech monopolies should follow. Or AT&T, the Grandfather of the *nix OS. Probably the largest monopoly of the last century. No comany's hands are clean here. There is much about Mozilla that is coming off very badly and why they had to form their commercial side and their Google connection. Are they getting the best of both worlds there?
I don't see much difference in any of these "wars" raging on in terms of one side having the high ground. If Linux ever makes it to the desktop and replaces Microsoft, it will be on the back of large corporate America and amount to nothing more than rearranging the deck chairs on the Titantic when it comes to corporate greed. The U.S. anyway, even with Dem control of congress, is not going socialist anytime soon.
