multanihl: nice post
Don't agree with some of it but still, nicely written.

But seriously, who wants to increase market share with bargain bin, throwaway PCs that have teeny tiny profit margins?

You are right. On the hardware side, it doesn't hurt Apple customers that Apple has such a tiny marketshare. However, since OSX has been artificially and onerously tied to Apple hardware, OSX too is stuck having a tiny marketshare and this does affect Apple customers. I guarentee there are far more "Windows Only" programs out there and "OSX Only". Now, if you happen to be one of those that doesn't need a single piece of "Windows Only" software, then you aren't affected by this. The sheer glee and excitement that rippled through the Mac community at the introduction of Bootcamp and Parallels seems to suggest that many Mac users do feel they are affected by OSX's small marketshare.

I will say that Microsoft has consistently been behind its competitors when it comes to innovation

I think this seriously depends on what your definition of "innovation" is. The truth is that almost all true innovation is done at Universities and tiny companies. Using the purest form of the word, not even Apple is very innovative (didn't invent the GUI, the mouse, the MP3 player, OS was licensed, etc.). Even their case designs are more artistic than innovative (no, clear plastic is not innovative, been around a long time).

the average Mac comes out a few bucks more expensive than a similarly-configured PC

And here is where the Apple fans really get you because they use the Mac as the standard and then hunt around for a similarly-configured PC. The hardware lock-in that Apple has imposed on its customers by forcing them to only buy their computers from Apple is that Mac customers have very little choice about what comes with their computers. Don't need firewire? Tough, you have to pay for it. Don't want a fancy keyboard? Tough, you have to pay for it. Don't want a wireless card? Tough, you have to pay for it. Don't want an expensive case? Tough, you have to pay for it. A far better comparison would be: configure a PC exactly the way you want it (since this is at least possible) and then find the closest Mac, and then compare prices. For 98% of the people out there, the Mac will be many hundreds of dollars more. If you are one of those 2% that actually want the stuff you are forced to buy, the Mac is for them. For the rest, they are better off looking elsewhere.

Antivirus software and subscription services;
$0. Doesn't change the price. However, why do you look only on the PC side of things. How about what you need to buy after you've brought your Mac home:
1 Microsoft Windows license to run all the software that won't run on OSX.

No, Macs aren't for office drones who just need to churn out spreadsheets and documents

Nor are they for anyone who is interested in developing business software. Nor are they for someone who needs nothing more the email and web. Nor are they for anyone who wants to play games. Nor are they for anyone who likes to build their own computers. The list goes on and on.
