For a DRM free version that let's me choose the program I want to use to manage my music.---

Best head on over to your Apple store then. I have 60 GB of music on my iPod and no DRM whatsoever. All iPods come DRM-free and will remain that way unless you add DRM-laden songs yourself.

As far as not using iTunes, you're free to do that as well.
