wii = fun family, xbox360=online games, ps3=highest performance
That's what the breakdown looks like at the moment I think.
I sold my family Xbox to get a PS2 because of Singstar, Eyetoy (they are fun family games).
So highest performance in the last generation didn't matter to me or a lot of people. Sure
halo and halo2 were great (less fun than I imagined online - no story!), but they're just First Person Shooters in the end, and this gets boring.
The Xbox360 has promise because Microsoft have released a development kit and a virtual bazaar where people can sell the games they write.
This is interesting and is a bit of a wildcard. On the down side, it's rare to see a fantastic game even on a PC written by small developers. Usually the expensive team full of character designers, animators, sound engineers etc are needed to make a professional game. However, perhaps the virtual bazaar is somewhere where a game concept can become successful, get noticed by Microsoft or another developer, and taken to professional levels. Also, I think it's unlikely that scenery, textures etc can be downloaded quickly enough to make a deep game available via the bazaar until internet bandwidth goes up.
But that may well happen in the Xbox360 life cycle.
The PS3 looks like it will have the ultimate performance, including the biggest storage format giving lots of space for far more detailed textures etc.
I think that in terms of unit sales volume, Wii could win! But I don't think there will be outright domination by any of the consoles since each appears to have a lot of product differential between it and other consoles.
The only real danger for the PS3 is if there is a technology flaw that means it doesn't outperform the xbox360. It would still get sales as a cheap hi definition video player even in this case, so I personally expect all three to be around and healthy in two years. - Posted by: stevey_d Posted on: 10/17/06 You are currently: a Guest | Members login | Terms of Use
