I've noticed that an easy way to tell if a particular energy source is economically viable is how the "alternative energy" crowd feels about it. If they love it, then it is a sure looser in the real world. Wind power is a great example; 20 years ago these folks would wet themselves at the very thought of a wind farm. Now that the technology has advanced to the point where it is starting to make sense, they are fighting it tooth and nail. I'd expect the same to happen with Solar power and hybrid cars. The day these folks start wringing their hands about solar panels, I'll know it's time for a new roof...
